Native American guitarist Link Wray and His Ray Men have an instrumental hit with "Rumble" which features distortion and an early use of the "power chord". The song reached No. 16 U.S. Pop. Although the song doesn't have lyrics, it was banned in New York and Boston for fear of gang violence.
