Def Jam records co-founder Russell Simmons organizes the first hip hop festival tour Fresh Fest which debuts on Labor Day featuring leading east coast hip hop groups and break dancers. The tour includes 27 concerts in the U.S. Fresh Fest II followed a year later with a similar lineup.
